This assignment was for Maura Cluthe's Graphic Form for illustrators class. Requirements: Illustrate and recipe- Text & Image, black & white, 8x10, vertical.
I went with "Nicki's Frozen Mint Mojitos". Because the illustration had to be black and white, i decided to go for a more dated look, retro polka-dot pattern, my own hand drawn text inspired by 1950's and 60's ads, and myself as a (much curvier) pin-up girl/ cabana girl / "the girl from Ipanema". The polka dot pattern also mimics the frozen beverage, as it has little speckles of dark green mint leaves once blended.
I think the throw-back look of the finished illustration made this risk-kay recipe for an alcoholic beverage appear classy and timeless.
Even though creating in black and white is, for me, a challenge, i love the way it came out. I really enjoy doing hand drawn lettering and this class is just the outlet i have been seeking in order to experiment with type. In addition, illustrating the character was refreshing and fun. Creating the individual elements for this piece was the easy part, however putting them together in a successful composition was frustrating, and something i need to work on a lot more. The background is scanned torn paper, and i assembled the separate hand made elements in photoshop and illustrator.
I have a feeling that my mother, (the original creator of the famous Blanchard family frozen mint mojito recipe) is going to really like this one! ( although I'm not sure this is the EXACT recipe she uses, but my own doctored-up version -oops!)
